'Century of historic cycles' go under the hammer

Copake Auction will hold its 19th annual Antique and Classic bicycle auction on Saturday, April 17.

The sale boasts consignments from museums and collectors from all over the US, Europe and Japan.

Highlights will include a rare circa 1883 Columbia Three Track Tricycle, a good selection of Highwheels, and four Boneshakers including a Shire and Michaux.

A rare Velocipede Highwheel used for ice riding, an Indian Racer and a historic 1942 Schwinn Paramount with factory provenance will also appear.

As well as pushbikes, a rare 250 CC BMW R25 pace motorcycle will also appear, selling alongside with a wealth of bicycle memorabilia and collectibles.

Absentee bids via the internet will be accepted.

As the auction house's name suggests, the sale will take place in Copake, New York, beginning at 10am.

In other vintage bicycle and motorcycle news, Bonhams' The International Classic MotorCycle Show will be held on April 25 in Stafford, UK.

Star lots include an original circa 1895 Hildebrand & Wolfmüller, the first motorcycle ever made.
