T206 Christy Mathewson proof makes $36,000

A 1909-1911 T206 Christy Mathewson white cap proof baseball card has sold for $35,850 at Heritage Auctions.

The unique lot is the only surviving proof specimen of a T206 baseball card extant.

The T206 series, issued by the American Tobacco Company in the early 1900s, is highly sought after among collectors.

The record for any baseball card stands at $2.1m, set for a T206 Honus Wagner in 2013.
