Sam Snead's 1942 PGA Championship trophy topped a sale of golf memorabilia at Heritage Auctions on September 25-26, realising $143,400.
Snead (1912-2002) is regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time, having achieved a record 82 PGA tour wins over the course of a career that spanned more than 50 years.

He won the championship for the first time in 1942, making the present trophy a major piece of golfing history.
Two more of his PGA trophies (from 1949 and 1951) previously sold for $101,575 and $119,500, respectively, at Heritage.
A set of golf clubs belonging to US president Dwight D Eisenhower also sold well, achieving $41,825.
Eisenhower was a fervent golf enthusiast and managed to rack up close to 800 rounds during his eight years in office in the 1950s.
In fact, he took the majority of his holidays at the Augusta National course in Georgia - where he stayed in a house close to the 10th tee.
He hit one particular tree so often that in frustration he called for it to be cut down.
Unfortunately he couldn't convince the course's management and it came to be known as "Eisenhower's Tree".
The clubs are engraved with the president's signature. He gave them to Gene Stout, his former instructor at the course, whose widow sold them in the 1990s.
