Mickey Mantle Yankees contract may see $1m in charity auction

The 1960 contract that baseball star Mickey Mantle signed with the New York Yankees is being offered at auction in a bid to raise funds for the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.

The contract will start with a minimum bid of $25,000 on May 1, but could bring more than $1m to the sale. It has been donated by Mantle's youngest son, Danny, who said his father spent his summers at New Jersey's Fort Lee.

Mickey Mantle Yankees contract
Mantle was paid $60,000 for 1960, but one year later he would become the game's highest paid player with a $75,000 contract

Mantle joined the Yankees in 1951 and by 1960 was playing in the MLB All-Star Game. The following year he would become the highest-paid player in baseball after signing a $75,000 contract.

On May 2-4, Heritage Auctions will sell the final jersey ever issued to Babe Ruth at the Yankees with an estimate of $300,000+.
