A shirt worn by German striker Franz Beckenbauer during his side's 1966 World Cup semi-final sold for £5,000 at Hansons Auctioneers on June 30, achieving its high estimate of £5,000 ($8,420).

The lot was presented to Sgt Walter Turner, who was assigned to guard the German side's hotel. He commented that at one point a player "tried to press some money into my hand" as a thank-you for his efforts.
"But I refused and asked instead for his shirt. The team had just returned from a victorious meeting with the Russians, and I was handed a white shirt still warm and damp with sweat - it was Number 4, Beckenbauer's."
It sold to a German collector.
