A Gomz Leningrad Space Model II camera achieved £17,000 ($28,726) at Special Auction Services' (SAS) sale of photographic and scientific equipment on April 30 in the UK.
The lot is one of 10-12 such cameras ever created and was intended for use by Russian cosmonauts during the 1960s, although it's unknown whether this particular example was flown.
It features enlarged dials for ease of use while wearing a space suit, alongside a rounded aperture designed to capture orbiting objects.
A top-secret prototype lunar surface camera designed for use in the Soviet Moon landing program also featured in the sale, achieving £8,000 ($13,518).
