Charles Lindbergh's book on his first solo Atlantic flight sells online

American aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh (1902-1974, pictured top right) was adored by the public during his lifetime, and will likely attract the adoration of bidders at Signature's online House Auction tomorrow (September 4).

Lindbergh was the first aviator to fly nonstop in a solo flight across the Atlantic in 1927. In doing so he became a national hero, nicknamed "Lucky Lindy", and was later awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his 1953 autobiography, The Spirit of St Louis.

An original Presentation Edition of that very book will feature in Signature's auction. Published in New York, 1953, this Scribner's First Edition is signed in full by Lindbergh himself and numbered on Presentation Edition page, "476" of 1,000 copies.

According to Signature, the aviator's autograph is darkly penned in black ink and slightly uneven, but otherwise fine. The book is contained within special red cloth binding, with illustrated endpapers and blue top-edge with silver lettering.

The front cover reads "Presentation Edition" beneath an airplane illustration. According to the lot notes, the book itself is also in "Fine" condition (the original glassine jacket apparently protects a vivid topstain) and will auction with an estimate of $2,000-3,000. Bids open at $1,000.

Needless to say, Lindbergh - who was also an accomplished author, explorer, inventor and social activist - is a great investment choice for anyone with an interest in autograph assets.

Unsurprisingly for a man who led such a varied life, a variety of autographed documents have cropped up on the markets in recent times. Among those currently for sale is this signed initial payment invoice for a brand new Ford Pinto car, dated to just eight months before he died.

Elsewhere, another unique piece of Lindbergh memorabilia is a signed menu from Club Cartagena, from a banquet held in his honour. Lindbergh has autographed the top left space of the card in blue ink.
