Queen Victoria mourning stockings to feature in sale at Duke's

A pair of Queen Victoria's black mourning stockings are to auction at Duke's in Dorchester, UK on October 14.

Deborah Doyle of Duke's told the Dorset Evening Echo, a local newspaper: "They are unused but have got the Royal logo on.

Queen Victoria
Queen Victoria wore black for the last 40 years of her life, following Albert's death in 1861

"The first pair to go up for auction fetched thousands of pounds, but we would probably expect a few hundred given that quite a few pairs have emerged since then."

She went on to say the stockings were made in large numbers following Albert's death, with the result that supply largely outstrips demand.

Last year Victoria's mourning dress sold for £4,400 ($6,691) at Hansons Auctioneers.
