A shawl Princess Diana was gifted on an official visit to Pakistan in 1991 sold for £1,403 ($1,856) at Reeman-Dansie earlier today.
Diana had originally planned to make the solo trip in 1990, but political issues within Pakistan prevented it.
Diana made the trip without Prince Charles
On her arrival in Islamabad she attended a dinner hosted by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan. For the next three days she toured the country, attending hospitals, schools and holy sites.
She was gifted this scarf by an Imam at the Badshahi Mosque.
The auction house explains: “She immediately wrapped it around her head with the Iman's help.
“He told her about the symbolic nature of this gift which was that long ago, the Prophet gave a Christian girl a black shawl as a symbol of the unity between their two religions.
“Upon her return to England, the Princess gave the shawl to her friend and acupuncturist Oonagh Shanley-Toffolo, who until her death in August 2015, had cherished it.”
Diana was a huge fashion icon and her clothing is in particular demand on the secondary market.
In 2013 the dress she wore while dancing with John Travolta at the White House in 1985 sold for £240,000 ($317,581).
