'Utterly spectacular' 1887 Benjamin Franklin stamp is priced $25,000

Michael I Casper Rare Stamp Auctions' sale on July 1 promises a selection of the very finest in certified and graded United States stamps.

Among the true population and condition rarities is this mint 1887 1c Ultramarine stamp billed as "an utterly spectacular copy... as fresh as the day it was printed," by the auction house.

The stamp bears a "strikingly deep" rich colour and an extremely detailed ultramarine impression of Benjamin Franklin on "pristine" white paper. It also boasts mathematically perfect centring and jumbo margins all round.

Encapsulated in plastic and graded GEM 100J quality by PSE (the Professional Stamp Experts body), this historic philatelic specimen carries an impressive estimate of $25,000.

Also featured in the sale is an extremely-well centered $1 Carmine rose, Parcel Post, originally printed by the US Bureau of Engraving & Printing in 1913.

Depicting fruit growers at work (other stamps in the series featured mail trains, steam ships and manufacturing) this Gem Jumbo copy boasts "intense" colour and enormous margins.

Described as Post Office fresh stamp will be sold with 2000 and 2010 PF certificates (it's also ex-Whitman) and is selling with a pre-sale estimate of $30,000.

Elsewhere, the auction will offer a nice selection of Columbian Covers and several lots of Rare Coins. It is being held in Ithaca, New York.
