St Johnsbury 'scarab' cancel offered at Robert Siegel

An 1848 cover displaying a rare St Johnsbury, Vermont "scarab" cancel is selling at Robert A Siegel.

The scarab cancel originates in St Johnsbury, Vermont in the late 1840s

It's valued at $15,000-20,000, making it one of the headline lots of the Peter Sharrer Collection of United States Postal Markings sale in New York on October 5.

The St Johnsbury scarab cancel is known as a "killer" cancel, as it was designed to completely obscure the stamp.

The practice did not take off until the 1850s, making this an early outlier.
