'Handsome' British North American stamp could post $30,000

Regency-Superior is an Official Auctioneer for the APS National StampShow - America's premier philatelic exhibition located this year in Columbus, Ohio. Their public auction is being held Saturday & Sunday, August 13-14th, with viewing right on the show floor.

This is probably the most valuable auction the company has ever held, with two $1m consignments.

The auction features many great USA stamps including the Millbury Provisional, the Orangeburg coil, numerous bluish paper issues, and US Special Printings.

Highlight of this auction is a vast collection of John T Davis's World Class Rarities including the Canadian Seaway Invert, the very rare Canada Victoria 12d black, the Trinidad Lady McCleod, some scarce Romania Moldavia Issues, and plenty more.

The Canada 12d black is listed here with an estimate of $30,000, but an example (albeit almost freakishly well-preserved) has sold for $425,000 before now, and this one too is a 'handsome example as the auctioneer puts it, though used rather than mint.

British North America Canadian black 12d stamp
Looking good, your Majesty... the Canadian black 12d stamp

Well centred, it is a very fine appearing copy of one of the most coveted British North American stamps, with margins huge to ample, rich colour and a largely face-free target cancel. Collectors with stamps from the region in their sights will be excited to see this Newfoundland inversion error is available away from the sale.

There are another 150 consignors including New York dealer Haig Nargizian. Regency is also offering James Berry's estate and Christopher Burtzloff's 'Weather Collection'.

In all, there are 3,297 lots of philatelic material, ranging from incredibly rare USA and Foreign singles, to large cover lots, to quality Country Collections and box lots - all being offered to the highest bidder.
