The proof set is one of a possible two in private hands

In all 413 designs were created for the issue before the present set was chosen.

The auction house comments: “The Shreves catalog of the first Brody collection in 2002 stated that only this complete set of 1902 Issue Panama-Pacific proofs exists in private hands.

“However, we believe there is at least one additional complete set in private hands. A master set of all 413 proofs resides in the Smithsonian collection.”

This set last sold for $28,750 at Heritage Auctions in 2006.
