Essex Stamp Auctions are holding their first rare stamp auction of the year next week.
The British company, whilst not one of the major auctioneers, has been doing well in recent times. They had a strong October auction with total realisations of over £115,000. Their British and Commonwealth section was greatly in demand and other regions including China, Europe and Asia also sold well.
This time they have a strong China section with original untouched collections amongst the lots, and there are also good sections of India, Brazil, delightful and rare Colombia, unusual Russia, good USA with Columbus and a great many good British Commonwealth singles, sets and collections, not forgetting Great Britain itself.

Real stamp experts will want to have a good rummage through the Chinese collections. With listings of just several hundred pounds, there are certain to be some excellent investments amongst the People's Republic material.
For those who want a more obvious investment, however, the British 1867-83 £5 orange on white paper is an obvious highlight. The unmounted, mint marginal copy, with several vertical creases nevertheless has excellent colour and centring. An attractive and affordable example of this classic and iconic stamp of the Victorian era, it is catalogued by Stanley Gibbons at £12,500 ($20,100).
