Beer stamps will cross the block in Robert A Siegel’s sale of the Grant Inman collection on September 20.
The US issued alcohol revenue stamps between 1933 and 1951
The top lot looks set to be a 1951 black on bright blue stamp for “25 barrels of fermented malt liquor”.
Revenue stamps were a straightforward way for the government to collect tax. This example was part of a set that was issued in 1933, after the repeal of prohibition, and discontinued in 1951.
Only two of these final year issues have survived. It’s expected to make around $27,500.
