Two St Christopher 1888 (May) "one/penny” on 2½d ultramarine stamps were the stars of Spink’s sale of the esteemed Brian Brookes Collection of St. Kitts-Nevis on January 23.
Spink calls them among “the rarest stamps from St Christopher”, and their auction prices prove the point.
The mint example achieved £19,200...
A mint single featuring a manuscript line through the original value sold for £19,200 ($27,066). It was further enhanced by the presence of part of its original gum and an inverted variety surcharge.
Mr Brookes had acquired the piece from the famous Charlton Henry collection in 1961.
A used example, without the manuscript line of the mint version, sold for £16,800 ($23,683).
