The chestnut and blue issue from 1919 made $195,216 at Phoenix Auctions in Australia on May 9 - a 400% increase on its $39,020 top estimate.

The previous world record for a single Kangaroo stamp stood at $176,930; it was set in New York in 2007 by a £1 stamp from the Arthur Grey collection.

The £1 stamp, which boasts the desirable sideways watermark, was offered from the celebrated collection of the late Stuart Hardy. Catalogue notes state that the stamp was Hardy's favourite.
