Rare handwritten lyrics by a rock legend

Today we're talking about Bruce Springsteen.

But let's be honest...

His career and music speak for themselves.

He's been a rock and roll legend for 50 years.

He's one of America's greatest songwriters.

And his epic live shows still knock everyone else out of the park.

They call him 'The Boss' for a reason.

Bruce Springsteen: a rock and roll poet who captures the heart of American life

The voice of America

No songwriter understands America better than Springsteen.

His songs can make you cry, or punch the air in triumph.

Born to Run. Badlands. The River. Glory Days.

They're honest, true and timeless.

“A good song gathers the years in,” Springsteen once said. “It's why you can sing it with such conviction 40 years after it's been written.”

So if you're a Springsteen fan, there's no finer piece you can own than this.

A page of original handwritten lyrics, from one of his most famous songs.

This page of Springsteen's original handwritten lyrics measures 8" x 10" - the ideal size for framing.

A page from the songbook

These are Springsteen's working lyrics to '4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)'.

Handwritten by Springsteen on a single sheet, circa early 1973.

Fully authenticated and in superb condition.

'Sandy' appears on his second album The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, and is one of the most acclaimed songs of his early career.

This early original manuscript differs from the final recorded version.

But the character of Sandy remains central. It has all the hallmarks of a classic Springsteen song.

And it's recognised by fans as a great insight into his creative process.

Springsteen's lyrics are written clearly in blue ink, and preserved in superb condition for a 50-year-old piece of rock and roll history.

Small town blues

'Sandy' is the girl from Asbury that breaks Springsteen's heart.

It's a classic song for anyone who ever left their hometown in search of something more.

And for Springsteen, it describes the start of his own journey as a struggling musician about to chase his dream:

"Then you get 'Sandy'. That's the guy and he's on the boardwalk, and I guess that was me then, when I was still around Asbury. And there's the girl.... Here it is. This is the beginning of the whole trip that's about to take place.

"The lyrics read in full:

"The bands, the bars, the girls, guitar, the tours;

"The kids say Sandy left town and moved in with her parents in New York;

"Since summer was over the lights on the boardwalk dimmed and she got bored;

"She has a little apartment by the beach, the landlady told me she don't live there no more;

"Since summer's gone I don't get home much myself anymore;

"Poor people got no money, no lights, no heat or gas for their car;

"They can't go no place and they can't see where they are"

songs are timeless, and these lyrics ring as true today as they did in 1973.

A "rock and roll poet"

Just like his heroes Bob Dylan and John Lennon, Springsteen is celebrated for his words as much as his music.

And just like those two legends, his handwritten song lyrics are highly prized by collectors.

That's why in 2018, the working lyrics to his greatest anthem 'Born to Run' sold at Sotheby's for $250,000.

And in November 2022, a set of lyrics for 'The E Street Shuffle' – also written in 1973, for the same album as 'Sandy' - went up for auction.

They were estimated at $6,000, but 22 bids later they finally sold for $19,200.

So this manuscript isn't just a great collector's piece.

Thanks to Springsteen's place in music history, it's also a valuable item with some serious long-term potential.
