Jimi Hendrix concert poster to lead counterculture sale

A rare first printing poster for a series of Jimi Hendrix concerts at the Fillmore Auditorium in February 1968 is to sell.

It's expected to make around $8,000-12,000 at PBA Galleries' fine books and counterculture memorabilia auction in San Francisco on August 11.

Jimi Hendrix poster
Rick Griffin was a legendary artist of the psychedelic era

The lot, known as the "Flying Eyeball", is one of the most iconic psychedelic posters of all time.

It was designed by legendary artist Rick Griffin, who arrived in San Francisco in 1966 - where he made a name for himself as a poster artist.

He went on to cofound the influential Berkley Bonapartes artists' collective.

For this poster Griffin was inspired by the hot rod aesthetic of the 1950s and 1960s and most notably the winged eyeball logo of car painter Von Dutch.

It proved a huge success and came to be endlessly reprinted, with copies tacked up in dorm rooms in college towns the world over.

It remains an enduring icon of San Francisco in the 1960s.

Another (restored) specimen made $19,000 in a private sale in 2013.

The present example is in excellent condition and could well achieve a similar sum, provided the right buyer is in attendance.
