A 1963 Rolls-Royce Phantom V formerly owned by Elvis Presley is estimated at $200,000-300,000 ahead of Bonhams' Quail Lodge auction in California on August 15.
The car was delivered new to James Young Coachbuilders of London, who added a series of modifications - including a classic Blaupunkt Koln radio, electric windows and a microphone - before shipping it on to Los Angeles.
Chickens forced Elvis to change the car's colour |
It was initially painted a deep shade of midnight blue - although according to legend Presley was forced to repaint it, as his mother's chickens would peck incessantly at their reflections in the finish whenever he went to visit her.
He kept the Phantom for five years before consigning it to a charity auction in 1968, where it raised $35,000.
Recently it has been heavily restored. The engine has been fully rebuilt and is in exceptional condition having been on display in a museum since the late 1980s.
Bonhams describes the lot as "unquestionably one of the more significant Phantom V's to have come up for sale in recent years" and a "jewel in the crown for any Elvis collector."
The Quail Lodge auction features a heavyweight line-up of classic cars, including a 1973 Ferrari 365GTS/4 Daytona Spyder - valued at $3.2m.
