Django Reinhardt-played guitar to sell at Julien’s

A Levin Deluxe archtop guitar played by legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt looks set to make $80,000-100,000.

In the mid-1930s, Reinhardt began playing with violinist Stephane Grapelli.

Django Reinhardt developed a signature style of playing

Together they pioneered a style that came to be known as gypsy jazz, which was defined by Reinhardt’s highly distinctive playing.

He wrote around 100 songs that went on to become standards - perhaps most notably the deeply sorrowful Nuages (1940), written in Nazi occupied France.

The song came to be seen as a symbol of French resistance.

This guitar belonged to Fred Guy of the Duke Ellington orchestra. Reindhart was photographed holding it after a show in 1946.

It will sell at Julien’s Auctiosn on May 20, along with Elvis’ first piano and an illustration by John Lennon.
