David Bowie's handwritten lyrics to Jean Genie have sold for £18,750 ($28,480) at Bonhams this afternoon, making a 25% increase on the £15,000 high estimate.

The lyrics formed part of Bonhams' Entertainment Memorabilia sale, which is currently taking place in London.
Also starring was a Vox guitar that can be seen in several important photographs of Bowie, which made £13,750 ($21,000) against an identical estimate.

The lyrics to Jean Genie, one of Bowie's most famous songs, were gifted to the leader of his New York fan club shortly after the song was released in 1972.
The 12-string guitar was purchased for the star in 1971 and featured in the catalogue for David Bowie Is, a sell-out 2013 exhibition celebrating the artist at London's Victoria and Albert Museum.
