The lot is heading to auction at RM Sotheby’s New York Icons sale on December 6, where it’s expected to sell for $400,000-500,000.

As well as being one of the biggest movie stars of his era, McQueen was a keen racing enthusiast and Le Mans was his passion project.

Memorabilia associated with the movie is in high demand.

This outfit is one of three survivors from the film. Another (minus helmet) sold for $425,000 at Bonhams in 2015.
