Marlon Brando's 'Godfather' hat makes $27,000 in online auction

The Stetson hat worn by Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather has sold as one of the star lots in Nate D Sanders' latest online auction, which closed on March 28.

The consignor made a good profit on the hat, which sold 34.1% above the original lot at Christie's that also included Brando's coat

Worn in the scene where Corleone is shot in Little Italy, the hat came to auction with provenance from Christie's, where it sold for $19,975 in 2000 along with Brando's overcoat. In the present sale, it made $26,798, marking a 34.1% increase in value.

The hat could prove a worthwhile purchase given the hype surrounding Dallas Buyer's Club

Hollywood headwear fared well in the sale, with the white cowboy hat worn by Matthew McConaughey in this year's Oscar-winning Dallas Buyer's Club selling for $12,956 - a price rarely reached by such a recent item.

Adding to its appeal was the inscription "Just Keep Living, Matthew McConaughey". The star secured the Best Actor award at this year's Academy Awards.
