London After Midnight poster could make $80,000 at Heritage Auctions

A poster for the lost film London After Midnight is coming to the market for the first time on November 22-23 in Dallas, as part of Heritage Auctions' Vintage Movie Posters Signature Auction.

Lon Chaney's performance was used as a defence in a 1928 murder case, with the perpetrator said to have been driven insane after watching the film

London After Midnight was a silent film released in 1927 starring Lon Chaney, yet the last known copy was destroyed in the famous 1967 MGM vault fire.

Eagerly sought by movie buffs, it has since been reconstructed by Turner Classic Movies using the original script and film stills.

The stone litho original one sheet hasn't been seen at auction in the 87 years since the film was released, warranting a $60,000-80,000 estimate.

There were two different versions of the poster made, this example and another in the rotogravure style. The present example remains in superb condition, though has been folded many times.

Also starring is a rare French four panel poster for King Kong. Posters for the classic 1933 film often see top bids at auction, and this is one of the rarest to have surfaced, making its first auction appearance at $30,000-60,000.

A half sheet poster for 1932's The Most Dangerous Game, described by Heritage Auctions as "more or less a phantom up until just a few years ago", is valued at $20,000-40,000.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a great range of rare posters for sale.
