La Dolce Vita poster highlights Heritage Auctions at $42,000

A poster for Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita has seen the highest bids in Heritage Auctions' November 16-17 Vintage Movie Posters Signature Auction, held in Dallas.

La Dolce Vita movie poster
La Dolce Vita is considered one of Fellini's finest films

The poster, a rare Italian 4-foglio that is seldom seen at auction, sold for $41,625. It is professionally mounted on linen and has had only minor touch-up work to the folds.

La Dolce Vita (1960) is considered one of Fellini's finest works, with the director himself considered among the greatest to have lived. The film follows stars Anita Ekberg and Marcello Mastroianni as they escape paparazzi through the streets of Rome.

It is believed that Fellini was the first to use the term "paparazzo", in La Dolce Vita. The word means "sparrow" in Italian, and was used to reflect the skittish movements of photographers as they hop around after celebrities.

Buster Keaton Three Ages poster
This is the only known example of the one sheet, with early Keaton posters very rarely seen at auction

The second highest bids of the sale were seen by the one sheet poster for Buster Keaton's Three Ages (1923), which made $38,837. According to Heritage, early one sheet posters of Buster Keaton hardly ever appear at auction, yet this one is of particular significance, originating from Keaton's first full-length feature film.

This is the only known one sheet from the film, and has received a fine restoration, eliminating the paper loss and staining.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has some wonderful vintage posters in stock.
