Joseph Schildkraut Academy Award Oscar
Early Academy Awards are in high demand among collectors

The award, obtained from Schildkraut's estate, was presented at the 10th Academy Awards, with The Life of Emile Zola also taking home the Best Picture and Best Screenplay awards. It is selling with a minimum bid of $2,500.

Schildkraut, an Austrian-American, was a highly-successful actor of Hollywood's golden age, with notable performances including The Diary of Anne Frank, The Three Musketeers and The Greatest Story Ever Told.

The academy introduced a rule in 1950 preventing recipients from passing awards on. Those from pre-1950 can be legally sold at auction, however, yet are scarcely seen.

The current auction record for an Oscar is held by the Best Film award for Gone with the Wind, which was bought by Michael Jackson for $1.5m in 1999.
