Hepburn's career began to take off in 1951, when she was cast in small parts in various films.

It was her appearance in Monte Carlo Baby (1951) that truly launched her into the big time.

During filming she was spotted by the French author Colette, who chose to cast her as the lead in the Broadway adaption of her novel Gigi.

Hepburn received huge acclaim for the role, becoming a star almost overnight.

She writes in a postcard: "Would you believe it, I'm in Monte Carlo working on a French Picture, this place is heavenly."

The collection also includes insights into her love life.

In one, dating to 1952, she writes of her break up with fiance James Hanson: "It is with a heavy heart I am writing to tell you James Hanson and I are no longer engaged, I know there is little I need explain to you, a gentleman of this profession.

"For a year I thought it possible to make our combined lives and careers work out...It is all very unhappy making but I am sure it is the only sensible dicision [sic]."
