'Royal & Ancient' golf book swings to $10k

A highly-sought after golfing classic was the joint most valuable lot at PBA Galleries' Fine Golf Books & Memorabilia sale, last week.

Items in the sale, held in San Francisco, US, originated from the collection of John M. McClelland, Jr and other owners.

The "large paper" edition of The Royal & Ancient Game of Golf is the rarest and most desired edition of the classic tome, authored by Harold H Hilton and Garden G Smith in 1912, way before the days of Tiger Woods.

The Royal & Ancient Game of Golf, sold for $10,200

Described as "one of the most magnificent books in the entire library of golf" by expert Joseph Murdoch, the book swung past its lower estimate to a final price of $10,200.

The other highest lot in PBA Galleries' sale proved to be a very unusual item indeed: a large bone china plate with a golfing scene painted in blue upon its surface.

Bearing a stamp on its underside indicating that it was made between 1891-1902, the unusual ceramic artefact also sold for $10,200.
