Olympic hockey net auction could be a 'once-in-a-lifetime opportunity'

It's a moment that will be remembered in Canadian folklore: the game winning goal scored by Sidney Crosby to defeat the US in the men's hockey final at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

Crosby's overtime winner united the nation in celebration and enabled Canada to once more claim to be the best at what many Canucks consider to be their own game - at least until Sochi in 2014.

And now the net in which Crosby shot the puck past US goalie Ryan Miller is up for sale courtesy of an online auction.

The Classic Auctions sale runs until March 29 and is attracting plenty of interest among hockey fans north of the US-Canada divide and memorabilia collectors and investors worldwide. The minimum bid for the net is $1,500.

Other memorabilia associated with the winning goal has already made its way to the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, including the puck, and Crosby's stick and gloves.

But the net has evaded the museum and now appears on the open market.

Marc Juteau, Classic Auctions' president, told Postmedia News that this is a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" for a collector.

The net is being sold alongside other Olympic hockey collectibles, including a jersey worn by Crosby in Canada's close win over Switzerland earlier in the tournament and a puck used earlier in the final's overtime period.

Montreal-based Classic Auctions sold Paul Henderson's jersey from the 1972 Summit Series for $1.27m last year.
