The 3.7-acre island stands in the river Thames, around 20 miles outside central London. It includes a seven bed property built in the 19th century that houses a memorial to the event.
The site was used throughout history as a meeting place for the council of Anglo-Saxon kings known as the Witenagemot and its selection was likely symbolic.
We have this fascinating signed document from King Henry VII, which dates to 1499.
