Grand Furniture & Decorative Arts auction comes to Massachusetts

Next month in Massachusetts, Skinner Inc are holding a sale of American Furniture & Decorative Arts, and it's a big one, with nearly 1,300 lots on offer.

The lots span all kinds of categories of collectibles:  American formal and country furniture alongside decorative arts, including folk art, naive portraiture, marine arts, pottery, fine clocks, Shaker artifacts, American textiles and needlework, American silver, Chinese export items, trade signs, and early glass.

Some of the highlights include a Speaking Dog Cast Iron Mechanical Bank created by Shepard Hardware Co., Buffalo, New York which wouldn't have looked out of place at RSL Auction's recent, very successful auction. It is listed here at $800-1,000.

Another piece of vintage metalwork is a late 19th century Molded Copper Ram Weather Vane from Waltham, Massachusetts. With a flattened full-body figure and its original horns, it carries an estimate of $4,000-6,000.

The pick of the furniture lots, however, is probably a Shaker Pine, Cherry, and Butternut Kitchen Table with Drawer. Possible originating from New Lebanon, New York in the early 19th century, the lot has slightly swollen legs and surface imperfections, but is still valued at $15,000-25,000.

Skinner's auction takes place on August 14-15, with the weather vane and table appearing on the second day.

However, collectors interested in furniture may wish to invest in something more valuable: An important George III period mahogany and satinwood cabinet designed by John Linnell.
