An American flag flown to the Moon as part of the historic Apollo 11 mission, accompanied by a certificate signed by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, is the highlight of a sale of science and space memorabilia at Nate D Sanders that closes on September 26.
The flag is mounted to an official NASA certificate which reads: "This flag travelled to the moon with Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing, on July 20 1969".
An identical flag and certificate sold for $47,652 in July of this year - indicating that the market for Apollo 11 memorabilia is strong.
The value of an Apollo 11 signed photo increased by 14.3% pa from 2000 to 2012, according to the PFC40 Autograph Index.
The auction also includes a rare typed letter by Albert Einstein, dating to June 10, 1938, in which he declines to write the foreword for a colleague's book. The lot includes an assortment of documents, including a photograph and a programme from Einstein's memorial service.
A letter by Einstein sent to Erik Gutkind, a Jewish philosopher, espousing the belief that God does not exist, sold for $3m on eBay in October last year.
The present sale, which began earlier this month, also features a selection of movie memorabilia.
