WW1 Flying Ace's Log Book goes under the hammer

Reginald Leach Johns was an exceptional pilot whose skills were put to the test during WW1.

A member of the famous "8 Naval" 208 Squad Sopwith Camel's, Johns notched up nine victories causing (with assistance) two enemy planes to be destroyed and seven to vanish from view out of control.

Johns's Log Book has now come up for auction, listing 21 of Johns's Combat Reports and Casualty Report alongside various articles and copied 'Naval 8' History. He kept the book updated from 20.7.1917 - 7.6.1918.

The last page has been entered by another and reads 'Acc. Killed 11.6.18'. Despite his skill Johns was killed in a crash, close to the end of hostilities.

This rare and valuable piece of military history is currently available at Wellington Auctions in their medals and militaria postal auction, and is expected to bring bids of up to £2,500. Johns's memorial plaque is also on offer, and expected to achieve £1,000.

The sale closes on March 2 at midnight GMT.
