Wilkinson turret revolver sells 36.1% above estimate at Bonhams

The turret revolver, produced by James Wilkinson & Son, is one of just 17 ever made

Bonhams' Antique Arms & Armour sale was highlighted yesterday (July 25) by the sale of a James Wilkinson & Son turret revolver, which beat its estimate by 36.1% to take the title of top lot.

Wilkinson Turret pistol A similar pistol is currently housed in the Royal Armouries

The exceptionally fine 64-bore revolver sold for 40,850 ($63,244), against a 20,000-30,000 estimate. The price achieved in the London sale reflects the weapon's rarity, as one of just a few turret revolvers produced by the renowned gun maker - better known as Wilkinson Sword. The pistol was constructed in 1839, and stands as one of just 17 turret revolvers made using the JW Cochran design, which was mainly employed for longarms. A similar example, which was once in the possession of author and poet Lord Egerton, is currently housed in the Royal Armouries at Leeds, UK. Bearing its maker's mark, with "no. 5158" inscribed as the production number, the seven shot turret revolver featured a browned twist octagonal sighted barrel, the surface finely engraved with foliate scrollwork. Also included in the lot was the original fitted and line mahogany case, with a full complement of accessories. Also featuring in the sale was a fine ormolu-mounted presentation sword which was presented to Captain George Silvertop by the Bywell Yeomanry Cavalry in 1818. Silvertop served as a captain during the Napoleonic Wars and was presented with the sword by his troop uponits disbandment. The magnificent piece features a fine curved blade, with the cast and chased hilt boasting a Medusa's head mounted below the dog's head crossguard. Retaining nearly all of its original gilding, the sword sold for 17,500. Paul Fraser Collectibles has a fine range of Napoleon Bonaparte memorabilia currently in stock, including an authentic strand of the Little General's hair. We also have a superb selection of militaria, which is highlighted by a letter written by Lord Nelson at the outset of the Napoleonic Wars.
