A Colt Peacemaker revolver used by a sergeant of the US 1st Volunteer Cavalry - better known as the Rough Riders - is expected to be a big draw at a July 24 sale.

The auction house will be hoping to repeat the success of its last sale on June 25, which saw a Native American chief's blanket soar past estimate to smash the world record price for Navajo art at auction.

The Rough Riders, a volunteer regiment of the US army, was established in 1898 during the Spanish-American war, due to a shortage of men caused by losses in the American civil war 30 years earlier. An eclectic bunch, the regiment was comprised mainly of cowboys, gold miners and Native Americans, led by soon-to-be-president Theodore Roosevelt, who quit his position running the department of the navy to serve alongside his struggling countrymen.

The revolver was carried into the regiment's most famous fight - the Battle of San Juan Hill - by Sgt Albert P Wright, where the Rough Riders were instrumental in the US victory over the Spanish forces. Following his time with the Rough Riders, Wright kept the gun in his possession before passing it to Herbert Lore, proprietor of the Painted Desert Inn in Arizona's Petrified Forest National Park.

Passed down through the generations of the Lore family, the gun is now being auctioned with an estimate of $7,000-9,000. Also featuring is a beautiful scrimshawed powder horn dating back to the late 18th/early 19th century, which is valued at $3,000-5,000.

We are currently offering collectors the chance to own a very rare autograph from the doomed US general George Custer at a fantastic price. See our full militaria collection here.
