Karl Goetz hubs and dies up for bids at Heritage Auctions

Heritage Auctions will offer the first part of a collection of more than 1,200 hubs and dies cut by Germany's most prolific medal artist, Karl Goetz, in its April 17-22 World and Ancient Coins Signature Auction in Chicago.

Goetz is best known as the engraver of the 1915 Lusitania medallion, which commemorates the notorious German sinking of the British ocean liner. His medals achieved recognition through both their artistry as well as their biting criticism of war.

"The dies and hubs will be offered in order as they appear in Gunter W. Kienast's opus The Medals of Karl Goetz," said Heritage Auctions' Cristiano Bierrenbach.

"Goetz' remarkable dies are a testament to his talent as well as the important, yet tumultuous, events during which he cultivated his fans and critics."

Minimum bids for the lots range from $1 to $400.

The collection will be offered in three parts, with the remaining two sales expected in September 2013 and April 2014.

Heritage Auctions follows the World and Ancient Coins Auction with its April 24-28 Currency Signature Auction, also held in Chicago. Headlining this sale is the only copy of the 1891 $1,000 treasury note in private hands.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a fantastic selection of word coins for sale, including a superb selection of gold pieces from the Italian Renaissance.
