Specialist military auctioneer Bosleys will be holding a sale of medals and militaria next week, which includes some very significant items that will appeal to collectors and investors in historical war memorabilia.
The leading lot is a Falklands War Distinguished Flying Medal - DFM - Group awarded to King's Badgeman, Major William Christopher O'Brien of the Royal Marines. Major O'Brien's 38 year career saw him serve in Belfast, the Falkland Islands and Afghanistan, being the oldest operational pilot to fly in the latter campaign.
The group consists of a Distinguished Flying Medal, a Campaign Service Medal, two clasps, a South Atlantic Medal with rosette, an Operational Service Clasp for service in Afghanistan, a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee medal, and a Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct medal.
This superb set of medals, honouring an incredibly brave pilot, has a grand estimate of £40,000-45,000. It would be an excellent modern addition to an existing medal collection, and will almost certainly grow much more valuable with time, making it a great investment.
Also included in the auction is a magnificent sword and silver tray, dating from the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th Century. The sword, which has single-edged, curved blade, has an ivory grip and three quarter length blue and gilt decoration.
It comes complete with a scabbard and was presented to William James in 1810, in recognition of his gallantry when a packet ship was attacked by French privateers. The commemorative silver tray bears a full description of the event. This unusual piece is expected to realise £15,000-20,000.
With over 850 lots, some going for as little as two figures, this auction presents an excellent opportunity for a newcomer to start an interesting and varied militaria collection. Whether you are interested in a particular conflict or just like the look of the items, it doesn't cost much to pay your respects to the brave - and make a return on your investments.
