Adolf Hitler bedsheet auction could bring $4,600 in bids at Dreweatts' sale

Just when you think you've seen it all... Adolf Hitler's bedding is going up for auction estimated at £3,000 ($4,674) on November 29.

The German wartime dictator was apparently very particular about his bedding, whose stitched decoration includes an embroidered "Hitler" type, and a Third Reich Eagle and swastika flanked with his initials "A H".

Hitler's bedsheet cover will sell with his white linen pillow case slip which also bears the embroidered "Hitler" type, eagle and "A H" monogram.

The single sheet measures 66 inches by 49 inches, and the pillowcase is around 30 inches square.

The bedding's provenance apparently goes back to the Fuhrer's Prinzregentstrasse apartment in Munich, Germany. Housekeeper Anny Winter is understood to have kept many artefacts from the apartment following Hitler and Evan Braun's suicides in 1945.

"It is extremely rare to find pieces of Hitler's bed linen embroidered with his personal motif and monogram coming to the market," Dreweatts' Militaria specialist Malcolm Claridge told UK newspaper the Daily Mail.

According to Dreweatts, the bedding items were first bought by a German private collector years ago.

The auctioneer says they have received "a lot of interest" in the run up to November 29's sale. Dreweatts will hold the auction in Paul Fraser Collectibles' home city of Bristol, UK. Online bidding is also available.

Believe it or not, Hitler's bedsheets aren't the only famous bedding related items to have appeared for sale on the collectors' markets.

From the Fuhrer to the Fab Four... Bedding from The Beatles’ inaugural US tour is for sale at asmallpieceofhistory.com

If you're a collector interested in less-controversial historical figures, then you also have a chance to own pieces of bedding slept-in by all four Beatles during their inaugural US tour. Fragments of the Fab Four's bedding are up for sale at www.asmallpieceofhistory.com.

The Beatles' bedding is traced back to a Detroit hotel in which the group stayed in the early-'60s.

Although the Fab Four's duvets fragments don't have intricate swastika decorations, their sale nevertheless illustrates the growing global appeal of unusual small pieces of history - for sale at very affordable prices just in time for Christmas.
