'$54,340' Dettingen Standard to auction in London

A 1743 Dettingen Standard, one of the earliest British cavalry standards in existence, is coming to auction in London on June 27.

The 8th Regiment of Horse standard was flown at the Battle of Dettingen in Bavaria, the last time an English king led his troops on the battlefield.

Dettingen Standard
George II led his troops in Bavaria

George II was the man in charge, with the British, Hanoverian and Habsburg troops victorious over the French during the war of the Austrian succession.

We believe it is worth every penny of its £35,000 high estimate, considering its unique place in military history and its superb provenance.

For more than 250 years it has remained among the descendants of the man who carried it into battle, Subaltern Officer Cornet Henry Richardson. It has been displayed at museums on three separate occasions, but has never been auctioned - until now.

These are heady days for military flag collectors; the only surviving Union Jack from the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar, flown on board HMS Spartiate, sold for £384,000 in 2010 - a record for a Union Jack at auction, while what is thought to be the last battle flag from the American revolution in private ownership comes to auction in November, with a $600,000 estimate.

The June 27 sale will also feature a 1676 French royal long flintlock holster pistol, made by Bertrand Piraube for the king of Sweden Charles XI. It is expected to make £40,000, an estimate matched by a 1540 German Renaissance silver-mounted hand-and-a-half sword, which features a winged figure of Justice.

The auction will comprise 556 lots of militaria in all, with a 1559 Japanese silver-mounted dagger also set to perform well, with a £7,000 valuation.

Paul Fraser Collectibles is delighted to offer you our carefully selected investment-grade militaria right now.
