The world's largest gold coin will be auctioned in Vienna

On June 25, the world's largest gold coin, a 2007 Canadian $ 1,000,000 Maple Leaf will be auctioned at Vienna's Dorotheum.

This coin breaks all records... Weighing a staggering 100 kilos and measuring 53 cm in diameter, it can't even be lifted by two men.

But the most remarkable thing about this amazing coin is that it is made exclusively of the purest, finest and most refined 999.99/1000 gold.

The World Record-breaking coin - which is also listed in the current edition of the Guinness Book of Records - bears the image of Elizabeth II, and is the largest official portrait of the Queen in solid gold.

On the coin's reverse are three maple leaves, the national symbol of Canada where the coin was minted. What's more, the face value of $1m (see the picture, below) is far below the current gold price.

According to Dorotheum, the starting price will be based on the daily gold rate.

Until now, the gigantic Maple Leaf was on loan to the 'Münzkabinett' of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, which houses one of the largest numismatic collections in the world.

The impressive coin has now been entrusted to the Dorotheum, the leading European auctioneer which has held numismatic auctions for more than 200 years.

Appropriately enought, the high-carat coin will go under the hammer at a diamond auction. Diamonds, along with gold, are on the rise as investments - so the Maple Leaf will be in fitting company.

The world's largest gold coin will go under the hammer on June 25 at Palais Dorotheum in Vienna, Italy; an event likely to be enjoyed by the world's press.
