Struck in Rome, dug up in Bishop's Wood

An amazing selection of Roman rare coins, notably from the reigns of both Constantine Emperors is to be offered by Baldwin's.

The selection is from the famous Bishop's Wood Hoard, discovered over a century ago entirely by accident. Workmen repairing a road smashed a jar open with a loose pick strike and were astonished when a vast number of coins spilled out.

It is thought that the valuable hoard was intended to be used to pay an army during uprisings in the third century AD.

This portion of the find comprises 1,661 coins, the largest number still in private hands as many of the original group were lost or handed to museums, and they have been held by the same family since the year of that first amazing find.

The auction will include a reprint of the article from the Numsimatic Chronicle of 1896 and a reprint of 'Notes on a Great Hoard of Roman Coins found at Bishop's Wood in 1895' from the "Transactions of the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society", vol. XIX, pp. 399-420, both written by Mary Bagnall-Oakeley.

Even the original jar in which the coins appeared, now carefully repaired, will be on offer. The sale takes place on May 4-5 in London, and we will bring you more details closer to the time.

Those interested in Roman coins will be interested to take a look at these three rare gold coins from the Roman Empire: one from the time of Augustus/Tiberius, one depicting Vespasian, and one from the much later reign of the cruel Carinus.
