Perfect 'Diamond Jubilee' coin? Year of the Dragon coin sells in Hong Kong

Here's a quick reminder that two big anniversaries, the Chinese Year of the Dragon and Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee, will be marked by an auction in Hong Kong on April 5.

The 2012 Year of the Dragon,
Gold Proof £1,000 coin

Lots for sale will include a very special brilliant mint state 2012 Year of the Dragon, Gold Proof £1,000 (1 kilogram) coin. The coin is one of just 10 ever struck. It is also the first of its kind ever to be offered at public auction, anywhere in the world.

Bearing Elizabeth II's image based on Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS's acclaimed portrait, the coin was minted by the Royal Mint and is fully-authenticated. The singular coin also happens to be legal tender in Alderney, the third largest of the British Channel Islands.

The Gold Proof £1,000 coin's reverse was crafted by Gordon Summers, the most senior engraver in the Royal Mint. According to auctioneer Baldwin's, the coin weights 1005g, is struck in 0.999 Fine Gold and contains a kilo of pure gold.

The 2012 Year of the Dragon, Gold Proof £1,000 coin is expected to bring $100,000-120,000 when it is sold by Baldwin's Auctions on 5th April.

A large selection of Chinese and Hong Kong banknotes, Sycee and world coins will also be among the 1094 lots for sale.
