Palestinian banknote draws bids of £80,000

Following on from its phenomenally successful December 2009 sale, Spink held an auction of rare world banknotes, yesterday (April 14).

The sale's most exciting lots comprised a number of Palestinian banknotes.

These had also proved successful in the December auction, with four notes selling for £82,000 between them - including two which realised 10 times their estimates.

Predicted as the star lot was this green £100 trial note from circa 1938.

Palestinian £100

The history of the note is not well recorded, although it is understood to have been submitted for trial and then rejected in 1939.

This exceptionally fine, attractive and exceedingly rare note emerged as the sale's top lot.

Bids from excited notaphilists pushed its value up to £80,000.
