An 1882 $5 National Bank Note, Fr. 574, KL 1138, from the First National Bank of Hawaii, Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, in PCGS Very Fine 35 has auctioned for $54,280.
The rarity was sold on September 7 as part of the "The 9/09 Hawaii Collection of Coins and Currency," jointly organised by leading numismatists Stack's rare coins of New York, and Ira and Larry Goldberg's Coins and Collectibles of Beverly Hills.
The 1882 $5 is described as, "a very pretty Value Back Five with boardwalk margins and outstanding eye appeal."
A unique complete scrip uncut sheet from the Lahainaluna Seminary, Lahainaluna, Hawaii, circa 1843 brought $41,400.
Another top scrip lot was one of only three known, and undated, Ladd & Co. $5 Kala Elma notes from the Koloa Plantation. It brought $24,150. The Koloa Plantation was the first commercial sugar plantation in Hawaii.
An undated 1880 Republic of Hawaii $10 Silver Certificate of Deposit, P-7a, in PCGS Fine 12, sold for $14,375. Bearing Ashley-Damon signatures, it was one of only two uncancelled $10 Series C notes known.
