$86k Queen Elizabeth note reigns supreme in Singapore

A number of exceptional Singaporean numismatic rarities went under the hammer at Mavin International's two Saturday sales of collectible historic coins and banknotes, held on March 13 and 20.

The sale's big lot emerged in the banknotes session, held on March 20: a Malaya and British Borneo $1000 note, graded PMG AU50 EPQ.

Dated March 21, 1953 and bearing the portrait of England's Queen Elizabeth II from that era, the note is uncirculated, extremely rare and consigned from a family heirloom.

Unmolested for decades, according to the seller, the note - serial no. A/1 27602 - had been designated Exceptional Paper Quality status prior to the auction thanks to the "wonderful sheen" on its surface.

This exceptional note realised $86,000 in Mavin's sale.

Elsewhere in the auction, a Singapore $10000 banknote brought a final hammer price of $33,000.
