The silver proof dollar from the New Orleans mint was previously unknown, and its existence was even doubted by many numismatists.
Today, five have been discovered and certified by NGC, with this example the highest graded of the lot. It starts at $60,000 at Heritage, but is likely to sell far past the $100,000 mark.
In April, Heritage Auctions sold one of the most famous coins in US numismatics, the Walton 1913 Liberty Head Nickel, for $3.2m.
