As any motoring enthusiast will tell you, it's one of the finest sports cars ever built. The McLaren F1 GTR has been described as "the 20th Century's ultimate motoring icon", and one particular example is heading to a Bonhams auction later this year.
The ex-GTC Gulf Team Davidoff 1997 McLaren F1 GTR 'Longtail' FIA GT Endurance Racing Coupe, to give the car its (very) full title, will appear at the forthcoming Quail Lodge Sale in Carmel, California on August 16 - 17.
The car has an extensive racing history, having been driven in events at Nurburgring, Spa-Francorchamps, Donington Park and Laguna Seca, and was the final McLaren F1 GTR made by the British McLaren Cars factory in Woking, Surrey.
"We are delighted to have been appointed by an international collector to represent this breathtaking piece of competition machinery," said Bonhams'Head of Motoring Mark Osborne. "Racing legends like the McLaren F1 GTR rarely if ever appear at auction and Bonhams' appointment speaks volumes about our leadership in this sector of the market."

The car's stunning design includes the unique 'centerline' driving position, an all-composite structure and the iconic pale-blue and orange colours of the highly successful Gulf Oil team.
It has been described as "one of the finest and most exclusive and charismatic racing coupes available anywhere in the world," and looks certain to attract collectors of the highest calibre when it crosses the auction block in August.
Bonhams are still accepting consignments for the sale, and will be announcing further automotive treasures as they're added to the line-up.
