The 10 best Japanese classic cars?

Good news for those with an interest in Hondas, Datsuns and Mazdas: a leading magazine for car enthusiasts has compiled a list of the 10 best future Japanese car investments.

For car collectors interested in Japanese motors from bygone eras, these are the models to look out for (listed in no particular order):

Acura Integra Type R, 1997-2001 - this modern classic's US production was limited to 3,850 examples, with one mission: to win races. It has a lightened, reinforced body, reworked suspension, bigger brakes and a hand-assembled engine.

Mazda RX-7, 1979-85 - The original RX-7 put Mazda on the US map ,with a smooth rotary engine and sexy sheet metal. It's inner workings were unremarkable, but it was the right car for the times and enjoyed had a track record.

Datsun 510, 1967-'73 - it wasn't super fast, but Peter Brock's British Racing race team gave the 510 its racing heyday. Thousands of enthusiasts followed suit in autocross and club racing across the US.

Mazda RX-3, 1971-'78 - this car has a special cult following, enjoying a successful competition record in both professional and amateur competitions. It has become rare, and prices continue to climb.

Datsun 240Z, 1970-1973 - this car single-handedly destroyed the British sports car industry, some say. The 240Z was fast, practical and beautiful with a famously smooth inline six engine.

Acura NSX, 1990-2005 - proving that Honda can build a supercar. The car is comfortable, fast and stylish. And it always starts on the first try.

Honda CRX Si, 1985-'91 - the small CRX's two design generations both combined a flyweight chassis and responsive engine. The Si version added better brakes, more power and a nicer interior; like driving an "air-powered impact gun," say Grassroots.

Honda S600, 1964-'66 - it featured a small inline-four engine fed by four individual carburetors. The S600 features an unconventional chain drive, a nod to Honda's motorcycle roots.

Toyota Corolla GT-S, 1983-'87 - the US version of the Toyota Sprinter - which had its own Japanese Manga cartoon featuring the adventures of tofu delivery boy Takumi Fujiwara - enjoys a strong cult following.

Mazda Miata, 1990-'97 - the car that re-ignited America's love affair with the classic sports car wasn't the fastest vehicle, but it had the right balance and poise to be a great drive. This car isn't rare, but it is getting harder to find a clean original model.
