The distinguished Ferrari collection of Sherman M Wolf will star at Pebble Beach
The illustrious collection of Sherman M Wolf, featuring four of the finest Ferraris, will sell at the world renowned Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance auctions on August 18-19.
Wolf also harboured a passion for collecting antique clocks and radios
The sale follows the passing ofWolf earlier this year,a dedicated collector who was revered by the car community for his enthusiasm and passion. He often displayed his stunning vehicles at an array of shows and was also a strong participant in road rallies such as the Mille Miglia, Colorado Grand and Tour Auto.
"Sherman Wolf was one of the most earnest and generous Ferrari enthusiasts I've ever known and he is dearly missed by many friends in the collecting community," said the auction house's David Gooding. "We are honoured to offer his stunning collection for the next generation to continue his legacy of passion and admiration for these extraordinary Ferraris."
Starring in the collection will be his 1960 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Alloy California Spider Competizione (Chassis 1639 GT), which is widely recognised as one of the finest sports cars of all-time. One of only nine alloy-bodied LWB California Spiders ever built, the Ferrari features highly desirable covered headlights and full race specifications, making it a much coveted collector's car.It is expected to bring $7m-9m.
Next up is his 1953 Ferrari 340 MM Competition Spider by Vignale (Chassis 0350 AM). An incredibly rare model, it is the last of 10 340MMs as well as the last of five to have been bodied by Vignale. Having won at Pebble Beach, Palm Springs, Seafair and Stead AFB, Wolf acquired the vehicle in 1984 and it soon became one of his favourite touring cars. Complete with its unrestored, matching numbers engine, it will sell with a $4.5m-6.5m estimate.
Also featuring is a 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC with coachwork by Scaglietti, which also boasts its matching numbers engine and chassis. Having been delivered new to sports racing pioneer John von Neuman, and a participant in the Monterey Historics and Colorado Grand, a $3.75m-4.5m estimate has been set.
Following the TRC will be one of 272 examples of the 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO supercar, which boasts both air-conditioning and power windows - the only options available on release. With just 6,000 miles on the clock, it will sell for $750,000-900,000.
